With a total investment of nearly VND 47,900 billion, Metro Line 2 project is not only one of the key transport projects but also a symbol of the modern development of the city. Metro Line 2 project was approved in 2010, with an initial total investment of 1.3 billion USD (equivalent to VND 26,000 billion). By 2019, the total investment had been adjusted to 2.1 billion USD (nearly VND 47,900 billion). Of which, ODA capital accounts for a large proportion, with VND 37,487 billion from three main sources: Asian Development Bank (ADB), German Reconstruction Bank (KfW) and European Investment Bank (EIB). This huge amount of money is mainly allocated to key items such as: building a complex underground tunnel system, purchasing modern trains that meet international standards, and carrying out site clearance, compensation, and resettlement for affected people.
With a length of more than 11 km, this metro line is designed with most of the underground section, to minimize encroachment on people's living space, reduce traffic congestion, and create a modern, civilized urban image. The elevated section, mainly concentrated in the Tham Luong depot area, not only helps reduce investment costs but also creates favorable conditions for train maintenance, repair, and operation.
The underground station system is designed according to international standards, with modern, airy, and convenient architecture. The stations are equipped with escalators, elevators, and modern information systems, ensuring convenience for passengers when traveling. When put into operation, Metro Line 2 will connect with Metro Line 1 at Ben Thanh Station, forming an important traffic axis, connecting the city center with suburban districts, connecting the East - West of the city. In the future, this metro line will be expanded to connect with other metro lines, forming a modern public transport network, contributing to reducing traffic congestion, environmental pollution and improving the quality of life of city residents.
Metro Line 2 Map Ben Thanh - Tham Luong
Metro Line 2 Ben Thanh - Tham Luong is divided into three main phases, starting from the bustling Ben Thanh station.
- Phase one: According to the Decision of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the project to build Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) phase 1 has a total investment of up to 47,890 billion VND. With a total length of about 11.3km, this metro line will have 11 stations, most of which are underground stations serving the travel needs of people through districts 1, 10, 5 and 6. The project has been divided into 8 main packages, including items such as tunnel construction, stations, electromechanical systems, rails... to ensure the progress and quality of the project.
- Phase two: expanding the network from Ben Thanh to Thu Thiem and continuing to Tay Ninh Bus Station, with a total length of about 9.1km and 9 stations. The project has an estimated total investment of 1.482 billion USD, funded by ODA and PPP sources. Currently, pre-feasibility studies have been completed, opening up the prospect of completing a modern metro network to serve the travel needs of people.
- Phase 3: expanding the network to the Northwest Cu Chi area, with a total length of 28km and 22 elevated stations. The project has an estimated total investment of 2.714 billion USD, funded by ODA and PPP sources. Currently, pre-feasibility studies have been completed, opening up the prospect of completing a modern metro network to serve the travel needs of people in the suburbs.
With the main route running underground through main roads such as Pham Hong Thai, Cach Mang Thang Tam and Truong Chinh, Metro system No. 2 is expected to solve traffic congestion on these routes and bring convenience to people moving between districts.
Update current progress
According to the original plan, Metro Line 2 will be constructed in 5 years and completed by the end of 2030. However, due to some technical difficulties and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project progress may be adjusted.
The project is divided into several phases, including: The site clearance and preliminary survey phase of Metro Line 2 project has been basically completed. The districts have completed 100% of land acquisition procedures, creating favorable conditions for the commencement of construction. However, the actual survey process has revealed significant challenges. Specifically, at many locations such as station S2 (Tao Dan), the underground technical infrastructure system is extremely complex, requiring high-tech solutions for relocation. In addition, at station S9 (Ba Queo), the mismatch between the original design and the existing water supply system has caused certain difficulties, requiring adjustments to the construction plan.
According to Mr. Vu Van Vinh, Director of Project Management Board 2 - Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, Metro Line 2 project is focusing on accelerating the construction progress of technical infrastructure items, especially the water supply and drainage system. The goal is to complete all these items before the end of the year, creating an important premise to start construction of main works such as underground stations, tunnels and elevated sections. The commencement of these main items will mark a new step forward, opening a more exciting and complicated construction phase, including the installation of electrical systems, signals, rails and trial runs before officially putting the metro line into operation. According to the original plan, Metro Line 2 will be put into operation from 2026. However, due to many obstacles, Ho Chi Minh City has adjusted the project completion time to 2030.
